Consumer Price Index 1790-1990 .

Last revised: 7 May 2004

Raw data entered and plotted from Appendix A, Kevin Phillips, Wealth & Democracy

Both indexes have been computed to use 1860 as a base (1860 equals 100). The Composite Consumer Price Index splices the U.S. government Consumer Price Index to the computations of economists Paul David and Peter Solar taking the index back-to colonial times. The Taylor-Hoover Wholesale Price Index is included (through 1958) to illustrate the greater effects of inflation and deflation on agricultural commodities.
